Running for:
VP External

About me:
Hi, I'm Tracy! I’m originally from Edmonton, Alberta but came to Hamilton in 2022 to study Health Sciences at Mac! Last year, I had the opportunity to go to Japan for a year, learning the language, going on exchange, and working. These experiences drove me to apply to VP External, as I think the exposure to cross-provincial and international cultural differences have broadened my perspective and how I think through problems. I hope to bring more of these opportunities to Mac Med as the next VP External!

If you’re ever wanting to rock climb, draw, or eat good food, feel free to reach out because I love a good side quest!

My platform:
Opportunities Hub
The search for opportunities—whether it be awards, clinical experience, or research—is always a struggle. As your next VP External, I plan on creating a centralized Opportunities Hub where students can access the latest opportunities provincially, nationally, and internationally. This gives you an easier way to discover opportunities you may never have known existed, while spending less time searching for them.

Connecting Beyond McMaster
Growing up in Alberta, spending a year in Japan, and now studying in Ontario, I’ve learned that new perspectives are everything. As VP External, I hope to foster this culture by creating pathways for students to explore interprovincial and international experiences.

This means connecting students with physicians who can provide region-specific knowledge—think rural care in BC or research in the Maritimes—and building relationships with medical students at other schools who can facilitate inter-province research collaborations and share first-hand advice on navigating visiting electives.

How do you plan to ensure that EDI is integrated in your role(s)?
Recognizing my own positionality and limitations is an important part of practicing in this role. Growing up as a Chinese-Canadian in Alberta and spending a year in Japan, I have experienced how much our perspectives can differ based on our communities, cultures, and experiences. At the same time, I recognize that my experiences are limited, and there are histories, events, cultures, and perspectives that I do not know enough about.

As VP External, I want to approach my role with the willingness to learn. There is so much culture and knowledge that I don't know, and I plan to listen to my peers, our tutors, and community to gain a more well-rounded perspective. By listening and representing, I hope to better understand the diversity of our student body and ensure that I am advocating for the needs and priorities of McMaster medical students as a whole.
