Running for:
VP Global Health
About me:
Hello! I’m Sirabhatr (she/her) – better known as Patti!
What I’ve been involved in:
President of Global Understanding through Nursing Initiatives (GUNI)
Arts & Culture Director for McMaster University’s Nursing Student Society (MUNSS)
Communications & Social Media Director for McMaster Pop Orchestra
Welcome Week Nursing Representative
Clinical Extern on Oncology/Medicine
These leadership roles have empowered me to strengthen my communication, problem-solving, and time-management skills. I have experience leading small and large groups and am familiar with event planning processes. Being involved in a variety of leadership roles has allowed me to expand my skillset and I consider myself a jack of all trades:)
More interesting things about me: listening to/making music is my most favourite hobby! I also dabble in other arts like drawing and painting. In the pursuit of gaining new skills and challenging myself, I’ve been self-learning how to dance. I play video games in my free time.
My platform:
During my time at McMaster, I have advocated for better attention on global health (GH) in the nursing curriculum. When I noticed a lack of GH resources for students, I took initiative to reinstate an inactive club called Global Understanding through Nursing Initiatives. As president, I collaborated with faculty and students to increase awareness of ongoing GH concerns, northern and international nursing careers, and opportunities for clinical exchange. I’ve been involved in many other leadership/executive roles throughout my undergrad as well.
That is all to say — I will be stepping into this VP GH role with relevant experience! I am comfortable representing the student body and managing multiple projects. I will be a reliable leader for the GH committee and plan to closely work with them to plan events that cater to our cohort’s interests and needs. Currently, ideas are brewing about unique events like a disaster relief simulation!
How do you plan to ensure that EDI is integrated in your role(s)?
EDI is deeply ingrained into the concept of global health (GH) and I aim to ensure this relationship is respected and demonstrated during my time as VP. I was excited to hear that the current GH leaders have started to integrate the social considerations of medicine into our clinical skills curriculum. I plan to continue this initiative by reviewing the various case studies presented to us during Medical Foundations alongside other MMSC members like VP EDI, Black, and Indigenous Health. Together, I hope to find ways to introduce intersectionality into these scenarios and encourage students to consider the different social aspects that influence health. I believe that this concurrent combination of holistic thinking and clinical skill development is what enables students to develop an effective patient-centered approach to care. This is just one example of the many ways I will ensure EDI is integrated into my role as VP GH.
