Running for:
VP External, VP Academic

About me:

Hi everyone! I’m Rushan (he/him) and I recently learned it’s apparently a hot take to love living in Hamilton? After doing my undergrad at Mac (#Artsci), I can’t think of any other city with as many great restaurants, local events, and as much community spirit. As a former Toronto barista, you’ll find me around local cafes and practicing a “reverse Pomodoro” that’s about 20% work and 80% yap! I love spending time with others through fun adventures like coffee runs, intramural sports, concerts, and other cool events around town! Coming from a small undergraduate program, I know the importance of building a close-knit community where everyone feels included and welcome to join in—it has been amazing to meet and get to know so many in our class so far! I’m excited to be running for our class MMSC, and I can’t wait for all the memories we’ll make together! 😛

My platform:
If I’ve learned anything over the past few weeks, it’s that I’m surrounded by some of the most impressive people I’ve ever met! While getting to know our class during iMed, I was in awe of the many different paths we’ve all taken to get here. As VP External, I want to represent the diverse views and perspectives of our class to external advocacy bodies and on issues which we care about.

I’ll host weekly office hours where you can chat about anything you like, from your thoughts on recent OSAP changes to your meal-prep schedule this week. By dedicating time to connect with our c29 community, I want to be well-informed to efficiently advocate on your behalf!

I also plan to end gatekeeping, through sharing all sorts of opportunities for you to get involved! Through biweekly emails, I’ll share findings from OMSA, the CFMS, and from other student groups.

How do you plan to ensure that EDI is integrated in your role(s)?
Honestly, there’s no better saying than there’s no mEDIcine without EDI!

Likewise, I see no distinction between MMSC roles and integrating EDI; it’s something engrained within every role. As long as we work with people, we work with social and political beings intrinsically impacted by equity, diversity, and inclusion.

I plan to integrate EDI into my role through decolonization. Colonialism remains embedded in our institutions and society and requires active efforts to dismantle. I plan to further efforts to decolonize our medical curriculum and institutions, through student initiatives and collaborations with faculty. In a PBL-based curriculum, our learning risks reproducing harmful, exclusionary, and/or outdated knowledge we find online or through research.

I also plan to increase our opportunities to work with and learn from members of our diverse c29, UGME, McMaster and wider Hamilton communities.
