Running for:
VP Communications
About me:
Hi! My name is Phuong Ngo (she/her). I grew up in Burnaby (a city located about 30 minutes away from Vancouver) but moved to Ottawa after high school. For my undergraduate degree, I studied nursing at the University of Ottawa. I'm a proud student of the NRC!
A fun fact about me is that I love all types of puzzles (sudokus, crosswords, jigsaws, etc.), but Rubik’s Cubes hold a special place in my heart. I can solve a 3x3 in about 10 seconds, give or take a few. I used to compete, but now I’m more involved in the behind-the-scenes work and handle a lot of the communications for the World Cube Association. I believe the skills that I bring from that work will make me a good candidate for VP Communications.
My platform:
Effective communication is the heart of an engaged student community. To facilitate student-centred communication, I would work hard to:
- Provide clear and reliable communication about student affairs, events, academic and professional opportunities, and important announcements through weekly newsletters, making it easy for students to stay informed without feeling overwhelmed
- Maintain the MMSC website so that it stays a useful hub for information
- Collaborate with Interest Groups to promote their opportunities on social media, thereby fostering student engagement
- Strengthen connections between students and administration by ensuring students are aware of institutional policies while also providing ways for student perspectives to be heard
- Foster regional campus engagement by ensuring communications are accessible and relevant to all students and highlighting opportunities and events across all campuses
- Share initiatives, opportunities, and resources that matter to our diverse student body, with particular attention to those that support equity-deserving groups
How do you plan to ensure that EDI is integrated in your role(s)?
Our diverse student body is comprised of people from all walks of life, with unique identities, perspectives, and lived experiences. I think our communications should celebrate this great diversity. To integrate the principles of EDI into the VP Communications role, I would work to share opportunities that are meaningful to students from all backgrounds, while ensuring that initiatives supporting equity-deserving groups are amplified to foster their visibility and recognition. By collaborating with the student body and Interest Groups, I would work to amplify initiatives, opportunities, and resources that foster inclusion within the Mac Med community. My goal would be to use our communication platforms to ensure that all students feel represented and connected.
