Running for:
VP Internal (Hamilton), VP External
About me:
Hello! My name is Jared, and I’m the youngest of four siblings. I was born and raised in Toronto and have always loved being part of a busy, close-knit family.
Before medicine, I completed iBioMed here at McMaster and then went to U of T for my Master of Public Health. Now, I’m very happy to be back at Mac!
Outside of school, I love staying active, especially running and working out, spending time with friends, cooking, and watching movies. Most importantly, I’m a big fan of Costco, primarily for the free samples and occasionally for the actual shopping.
I’m really looking forward to getting to know everyone over the next three years, so if you ever see me around, please come say hi!
My platform:
My platform for VP External is centred on making opportunities beyond Mac Med accessible and relevant to our class.
First, I want to create regular, concise roundups of external opportunities, including conferences, awards, committees, and events, with key deadlines and details in one place.
Second, I want to actively seek class input before OMSA and CFMS discussions when relevant, then share important takeaways afterward so classmates know how Mac Med is being represented.
Third, I want to strengthen connections with students at other medical schools by sharing ideas, initiatives, and resources that are working elsewhere and exploring opportunities for cross-school collaboration.
Ultimately, I want VP External to be a two-way connection: bringing the voice of C29 beyond McMaster while bringing valuable opportunities and ideas back to our class.
How do you plan to ensure that EDI is integrated in your role(s)?
I plan to integrate EDI into my role in three main ways. First, I will proactively seek input, using anonymous feedback and class check-ins to hear from students who may not feel comfortable raising concerns publicly. Second, I will collaborate early, involving the VPs of EDI, Indigenous Health, and Black Health when relevant initiatives are being planned, rather than only seeking their input after decisions have been made. Third, I will build EDI into decision-making by considering factors such as accessibility, cost, timing, and whether an initiative could unintentionally exclude members of our class.
I recognize that I will not have the lived experience to fully understand every issue, so I will be willing to listen, ask questions, and adapt my approach based on the perspectives of others.
