Issachar Wureta

Picture
Running for:
President, VP Black Health, VP EDI

About me:

Hello! My name is Issachar. I'm someone who enjoys leadership, advocacy, and bringing people together, which is probably why I keep applying to positions that come with more meetings!

Before medical school, I was President of our student association, Lead Mentor at the faculty of Health Sciences, and a campus First Responder, and I've learned that the best leaders are approachable, organized, and willing to follow through. I care about creating spaces where people feel comfortable speaking up and where different perspectives are welcomed.

Outside of school, I love meeting new people, live music, my work across Southern Ontario as an Event Medic, and pretending I have a perfectly balanced schedule. I'm someone who takes responsibility seriously, but I also think leadership should feel human. I'm always happy to listen, problem-solve, and hopefully make our medical school experience a little better, while having fun along the way!

My platform:
I’m running for MMSC President because I want to help create a medical school experience where every student feels heard and supported. My platform is centered on transparent advocacy, a strong sense of community, accountable leadership, and a consistent smile.

As President, I will make it easier for students to share their concerns and ensure that their feedback reaches UGME and other relevant organizations. Just as importantly, I will keep our class informed about what is being discussed and what comes next. I also want MMSC to feel approachable and connected to student life, not separate from it.

I have learned that good leadership starts with listening and following through. I hope to bring that same energy to MMSC: someone who will advocate strongly for our class and still be a friendly face you can stop in the hallway to talk to.

How do you plan to ensure that EDI is integrated in your role(s)?
I plan to integrate EDI into my roles by making it part of the questions I ask before decisions are made: Who benefits? Who might be overlooked? What barriers are we assuming people can simply work around? I have learned that inclusion is not achieved by inviting everyone into the same room and assuming the job is done. It requires paying attention to who speaks, who stays silent, and whose concerns are treated as inconvenient.

I would focus on practical changes, such as making communication easier to access, designing programs with different needs in mind, and creating feedback processes that do not depend on the most confident or well-connected students speaking up. I also know that I cannot represent experiences I have not lived, so I would avoid making assumptions and instead build relationships with student groups and peers who can identify gaps I might miss.
