Running for:
VP Academic, VP Student Affairs
About me:
My name is Danny Del Rosso, and I am a first-year medical student at WRC! Previously, I completed an MSc in Biostatistics at UofT, and before that, McMaster Health Sciences. In second year, I had the opportunity to TA a cell biology course, and became really invested in student leadership as a result. I have since served as Academic Coordinator for my undergrad program, led our orientation week wellness committee, and most recently was president of my UofT department's graduate student union, for which I won a community engagement award. I have also TAed many students in Anatomy and Stats, including many of you! I really hope I can join the MMSC to keep it up. In my spare time, find me defending my title at the WRC ping-pong table, watching sci-fi and sitcoms, and playing board games.
My platform:
My platform is (fittingly) PBL: Placements, Benchmarks, and Learning Resources.
Placements: The pre-clerkship elective match is opaque and leaves students unmatched. Regional campus students are needlessly restricted in clerkship options. As a Waterloo Regional Campus student, I'll advocate for every student's access to the foundational clinical experiences they deserve.
Benchmarks: McMaster's first-iteration match rate fell to 89.1% last year. Faculty have responded with guidance and resources, and the MMSC has built an excellent collection that the program doesn't promote enough. I'll unify these efforts so students from every academic background know what they need to excel in clerkship and match to their dream specialties.
Learning Resources: I'll draw on my stats/CS background to lead data and software efforts that improve how we learn, and on my undergrad VP Academic experience to run events from specialty and research info sessions to fun MF review sessions with prizes.
How do you plan to ensure that EDI is integrated in your role(s)?
EDI is built into both of my platforms, and I am committed to learning more from the people around me to allow me to appropriately serve the Mac Med community! Benchmarks exist because students from non-traditional backgrounds, without physician loved ones, often don't know what they don't know about clerkship, CaRMS, and tutorial content. I'll unify faculty and MMSC resources so knowledge isn't gated behind connections. Placements is about access, not just process: an unclear elective match hits hardest for students who have specific obligations and travel limitations. I'll work with the VP(s) EDI, VP(s) Indigenous Health, and VP(s) Black Health to review resources and feedback together, using my biostats background to make gaps as visible as possible. As Wellness Head, forming groups will give underrepresented students a smaller community within the class, and events will be planned with accessibility, cost, and cultural needs in mind.
