Daniel Del Rosso

Running for:
VP Academic, VP Student Affairs

About me:

My name is Danny Del Rosso, and I am a first-year medical student at WRC! Previously, I completed an MSc in Biostatistics at UofT, and before that, McMaster Health Sciences. In second year, I had the opportunity to TA a cell biology course, and became really invested in student leadership as a result. I have since served as Academic Coordinator for my undergrad program, led our orientation week wellness committee, and most recently was president of my UofT department's graduate student union, for which I won a community engagement award. I have also TAed many students in Anatomy and Stats, including many of you! I really hope I can join the MMSC to keep it up. In my spare time, find me defending my title at the WRC ping-pong table, watching sci-fi and sitcoms, and playing board games.

My platform:
My platform is (again, fittingly) PBL: Protect our Time, Bring us Together, Liven it Up.

Protect our Time: Pre-clerkship students constantly budget time between studying, ECs, research, and actually living. Too many program-led wellness initiatives eat into that time rather than protect it. I'll advocate for freer schedules so we can prioritize whatever self care looks like to us.

Bring us Together: Many of us come from unique backgrounds or have niche interests. I'll follow up on the iMed groups initiative to build smaller groups that connect students with shared challenges or shared ways of unwinding.

Liven it Up: Drawing on my experience heading my undergraduate wellness committee, I'll run low-key events with something for everyone: pets, picnics, soup, nuts, and everything in between.

How do you plan to ensure that EDI is integrated in your role(s)?
EDI is built into both of my platforms, and I am committed to learning more from the people around me to allow me to appropriately serve the Mac Med community! Benchmarks exist because students from non-traditional backgrounds, without physician loved ones, often don't know what they don't know about clerkship, CaRMS, and tutorial content. I'll unify faculty and MMSC resources so knowledge isn't gated behind connections. Placements is about access, not just process: an unclear elective match hits hardest for students who have specific obligations and travel limitations. I'll work with the VP(s) EDI, VP(s) Indigenous Health, and VP(s) Black Health to review resources and feedback together, using my biostats background to make gaps as visible as possible. As Wellness Head, forming groups will give underrepresented students a smaller community within the class, and events will be planned with accessibility, cost, and cultural needs in mind.
