Running for:
VP Communications
About me:
I’m originally from Calgary, Alberta, where I completed my Honours degree in Biomedical Sciences at the University of Calgary, and I’m excited to be starting this new chapter here in St. Catharines. I’m someone who likes being involved and always seems to have a new hobby or project on the go. Outside of school, I love being outdoors and travelling, especially hiking, climbing, skiing, and backpacking. I also have a really creative side and spend a lot of my free time painting, scrapbooking, playing piano, and making things. Before medical school, I was involved in a few different clubs and community organizations, which I really enjoyed because I like meeting new people and working on things with a team. I’m excited to get more involved at McMaster, meet people from different years and campuses, and hopefully contribute to making medical school a little more fun and connected.
My platform:
I’m a very artsy and creative person, and I want to bring that into the VP Communications role. In my free time, I love designing poster boards, painting, scrapbooking, and, of course, posting on Instagram. I want to use that creativity to make MMSC communications more engaging, accessible, and fun for students. Whether it’s through more visually appealing newsletters, creative social media content, better event promotion, or new ways of sharing opportunities, I want students to actually enjoy keeping up with what’s happening in our medical school community.
I also want to make communication more organized and easy to navigate. From my experience as Secretary of the University of Calgary Outdoor Club, one of UCalgary’s most active clubs, I’m comfortable taking meeting minutes, tracking responsibilities, and keeping information organized. My goal is to combine these skills to make MMSC communications clear, timely, creative, and genuinely useful for students.
How do you plan to ensure that EDI is integrated in your role(s)?
As VP Communications, I would integrate EDI into the actual content and platforms students interact with. For newsletters, social media, and the MMSC website, I would make sure information is presented clearly and accessibly, while highlighting opportunities from a wide range of Interest Groups and communities rather than repeatedly promoting the same voices. When reviewing communications from Interest Groups, I would consider whether the language and imagery are welcoming and avoid assumptions about students’ backgrounds, identities, finances, or abilities. I would also use student polls and surveys to understand whose perspectives may be missing and what barriers students are experiencing. I want communication to reach students who may not already feel connected to certain groups or opportunities. I would also work closely with EDI-focused portfolios and Interest Groups to amplify their initiatives and make sure their events and resources are visible to the broader student body.
