Bashar Alobeid

Running for:
VP External

About me:

Hey everyone! My name is Bashar Alobeid, and I am very excited to run for and potentially represent you as VP External! I believe that life gains meaning from the connections and experiences we share with people. Running for VP External felt like a natural way to create more of those meaningful connections with you guys, as well as advocate for meaningful change to enhance our student experience!

On a more personal level, I am someone who loves to play various kinds of video games as well as work part-time as an avid food connoisseur. More than that, I am someone who takes their Spotify playlist and Letterbox account very seriously, so feel free to talk to me about those anytime you see me! Thank you for taking the time to consider my platform, and I wish you all the best in this med school journey of ours :D

My platform:
My platform as a VP External will be focused on 3 values that I believe are essential in enhancing the student experience.

1. Transparency: Create dedicated social media platforms aimed at facilitating CFMS/OMSA updates in a user-friendly way. A summary will be provided alongside detailed notes to prioritize convenience and ease. Social media platforms will include Instagram and Discord, but other options will also be considered.

2. Accessibility: Emphasize accessibility through private internal forms designed to facilitate communication between VP External and the student body. An option will also be provided to set up a 1-on-1 meeting with the VP External alongside dedicated office hours for feedback and student engagement.

3. Empowerment: Increase opportunities for involvement within CFMS/OMSA through volunteering initiatives. Expand opportunity access to local networks outside of the CFMS/OMSA sphere. Center student voices when representing McMaster within an official capacity.

How do you plan to ensure that EDI is integrated in your role(s)?
As a VP External candidate, I believe that initiative-taking and communication act as driving forces behind meaningful advocacy and leadership respectively. This is because the ability to advocate for wider student voices requires the person to effectively incorporate diverse needs and perspectives that are representative of the student body.

To ensure this, I will look into working with my fellow MMSC VPs to ensure that I can actively factor in these diverse perspectives from the student body through anonymized feedback forms, as well as implement accountability measures for me to uphold. Furthermore, I will also look into utilizing different McMaster resources available to help me navigate this newfound responsibility. Offices such as Student Health Education Center (SHEC), Women + Gender Equity Network (WGEN), and the Pride Community Center (PCC) will play a central role in my leadership as I make informed decisions within my role.
