Running for:
VP Student Affairs
About me:
Hi! My name is Alyssa (pronounced aLEEEEsa). I'm from Mississauga, and studied computer science at the University of Waterloo before coming to Mac. I switched from tech to med hoping for a more fulfilling career, and I’m running for MMSC hoping to build a fulfilling student life for us in pre-clerkship :) In undergrad, I helped plan my faculty-wide grad ball and was an orientation organizer, and in high school I was student council president, so I’ve picked up a few things about student life and event planning. I’ve also moved 4 times throughout undergrad for co-op (which I like to think of as a preview of clerkship!), which taught me to value my community in supporting life transitions. Some fun facts about me are that the cities I’ve moved to include NYC, San Francisco, and Hong Kong, and in my free time I like to dance and read!
My platform:
As medical students, first year is when we’ll have the most time together before entering clerkship where differing schedules and rotations can easily build feelings of loneliness. My hope is that as VP of Student Affairs, I can create as many opportunities as possible for us to build strong communities that will not only survive, but support the transition to clerkship. To me, this looks like hosting regular, low commitment events that can accommodate as many people as possible, providing games and other activities in the lounge that can be used for impromptu socials, and regularly seeking feedback on how to best support your wellness. Some ideas I have include speed-friending events, puppy yoga, and snack/wellness kits during stressful times, but above all, I hope to host initiatives that reflect your regular feedback and changing needs as we navigate medical school. We’re all in this together! ;)
How do you plan to ensure that EDI is integrated in your role(s)?
Wellness differs for everyone and is highly dependent on your unique positionality and life experiences. With this in mind, I plan to integrate EDI into my role by ensuring diverse identities are reflected both within the wellness committee itself, and in feedback collected through monthly surveys and presented to faculty. I also hope to collaborate with the VPs EDI to ensure that any events planned will be accessible and inclusive of our diverse student body. Through the mentorship programs, I’ll ensure that different facets of identity are available as bases for mentors and mentees to be matched, as I believe having a mentor who can relate to your experiences is incredibly validating. I also understand that for different students, the barriers to wellness will differ, so I hope to host a variety of initiatives supporting different aspects of wellness, such as nutrition and fitness, in addition to general stress relief.
