Running for:
VP Communications

About me:
Hi, I'm Alex! Outside of med school, you'll usually find me rock climbing, mountain biking, or doing pretty much anything outdoors with friends. I grew up in Waterloo and did my undergrad at Guelph in Biomedical Science, including two summers in a dairy nutrition lab, where I lived onsite in a camper and helped birth more calves than I can count (a very Guelph experience).

I love getting to know people, hearing their stories, and finding ways to build community. I've also always loved creating and designing things: I ran a small art business as a kid, and more recently built the website for my tutoring business from scratch.

I'm passionate about education, especially medical education and how we communicate with patients, but I've also spent lots of time learning how to be a well-rounded human and genuinely enjoy life along the way.

My platform:
I'm running for VP Communications because this is genuinely the kind of work I enjoy: building things people actually use, and making sure information doesn't get lost in the shuffle. In previous club exec roles, I've spent a lot of time managing communication across different teams, so I've seen firsthand how much smoother things run when updates are clear and easy to find.

My main focus is giving the MMSC website an update, adding more photos from our year and recent years so it feels current and reflects the c29 vibe, while also being more easily navigable. I also want to work with VP Academic to build a clearer resources page, so students can actually find what they need instead of digging through old emails.

Beyond that, I want communication from MMSC to feel approachable, informative, and fun. Staying in the loop shouldn't feel overwhelming, even with everything.

How do you plan to ensure that EDI is integrated in your role(s)?
As VP Communications, I see EDI as something that should be built into how information reaches students, not treated as a separate initiative. I want to make sure updates, events, and resources are communicated in ways that are accessible to everyone, considering things like language clarity, format (not everything should live in a dense email), and making sure content reflects the full diversity of our class, not just certain voices or campuses.

When I update the website and build out the resources page with VP Academic, I want to make sure EDI-related resources (support services, equity-seeking IGs, relevant contacts) are easy to find, not buried. I also plan to work closely with the VP EDI, VP IH, and VP BH portfolios to make sure their initiatives and events get the same visibility and promotion as everything else.
